Different Types of pumps and brief on application
Borehole & Well Pumps
Designed to go down a Small diameter holes. Bore hole and wells where the water source is many meters below ground level. Head such as these require the pump to be at the source.
Commonly used in irrigation, transfer, washdown and hydrpneumatic sets for open wells.
Civils, agricultural and industrial applications.
Submersible drainage Pump
A submersible pump is a device which has a hermetically sealed motor close-coupled to the pump body. The pump is then submerged into the liquid below for pumping. The main advantange of this type of pump is that it prevents pump cavitation, a issue associated with high elevation difference between pump and the fluid surface. Submersible pumps push fluid to the surface as opposed to jet pumps which have to pull fluids. Submersibles are more efficient.
There are variouse versions, such as
- Clean water application only
- Dirty water apllication and
- Water containing solids, generally found in septic tanks and small purification systems.
Cetrifugal Pumps
Centrifugal pumps are used to transport fluids, by the means of rotational energy, typically from an engine or electric motor.
The liquid enters the pump impeller along or near to the rotating axis and is accelerated by the impeller, flowing radially outward into a diffuser or volute chamber (casing), from where it exits.
Common uses include water, sewage, petroleum and petrochemical pumping, a centrifugal fan can commonly be used to implement a vacuum cleaner.
The reverse function of the centrifugal pump can be a water turbine converting potential energy of water pressure into mechanical rotational energy.
Centrifugal pumps containing two or more impellers are classified as a multistage pump.
The impellers may be mounted on the same shaft or on different shafts. At each stage, the fluid is directed to the center before making its way to the discharge on the outer diameter.
To acheive higher output pressure, impellers can be installed in series. Higher flow output will require the impellers being installed in parallel.
Application of the multistage centrifugal pump can range from clean water domestic to large scale Pumping plants for irrigation, heating, food processing and so on.
Swimming Pool Pumps
Swimming pool centrifugal pumps come with the added feature of a filter basket before the inlet. Surface debris such as leaves are caputered here. Maintainence is vital to the smooth running of your swimming pool system.
Jet Pumps
Jet pumps are electric motor pumps for the supply of clean water applications. Often require due to the self priming nature, allow them to draw water from upto 8mtrs.
Commonly used as part of a pressure set. Wash down systems, irrigation systems, and many more.
The pump consists of a cast iron housing, electric motor, Impeller, Mechanical Seal, Cenral Shaft, Fan.
Built in thermal protection helps to prevent the pumps from running dry for any length of time.
Well this covers some very basics, there many more variations of pumps –

Not sure what pump you need?
There are many variables to consider before buying a pump.
Ultimatley you are looking for a pump which matches the total dynamic head required for your specfic application.
Questions to consider
Electrical Supply and voltage
Water Source – this consists of how far away, total climb or drop over that distance (head), and viscosity of the fluid.
Pipe size – Internal bore size of the transfer line will determine many factors including maxium flow capacitys and friction loss.
Nowadays many will use online pump calculators.
